Leonard puts a twist on every thought, belief you might hold surrounding certain things and it makes you realize just how brainwashed we all are. Life as it is brutal, honest and quite depressing. Throughout the entire novel we get a different perspective on. Suddenly, everything makes perfect sense and yet it’s not derailed completely from the harsh truth of what such actions result in. Murder is being put into a different perspective and suddenly we’re in the minds of the murderer, not the victim. One of the many things Leonard brings up in the novel, all brilliant and thought provoking. Hence why this particular quote got me good. I never want that to happen, even if it means living on the street as a starving artist- I’ll do it. My biggest fear is to one day wake up and hate my job, my life. I hold firmly to my beliefs and one is to never, EVER do what makes you unhappy. Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re different, when you don’t belong anywhere. This particular quote struck me deep, mostly because I see so much of myself in Leonard. Show me it’s possible to be an adult and also be happy. Just don’t go back to that miserable place you go every day. Do anything! Something! Because you start a revolution one decision at a time, with each breath you take.

On this journey we learn about all the different people in Leonard’s life: His alcohol abusing father, his selfish mother, the übermorons at his school and, of course, Asher Beal. things to Leonard.Īnyways, the first two thirds of the book consists of Leonard’s one-day journey through his last school day. Let’s just say that Asher Beal is a very unpleasant, manipulative person who did horrible. Why? Well, that would be a massive spoiler, wouldn’t it? With no one to turn to, not even his own mother- who’s too preoccupied with meetings and mirrors to remember her son’s birthday- he decides to off himself and his ex-best friend. He’s a troubled, severely depressed teenage boy who’s been through hell and back. As you’ve read in the short summary, Leonard has issues.
